Friday 55

Welcome to Friday 55. The object of the game is to write a story using exactly 55 words. If you participate, be sure to drop a comment at G-Man’s blog so others will know how to find your story.

Soft jazz plays in the background, ebbing and flowing as I pass near vacant buildings. Rueful smiles greet me as I walk along the streets. Eyes never quite meet mine, preferring instead to scan the pavement. The smell of fine cuisine permeates the air, covering the subtle stench of decay. This is now New Orleans.

YAHTZEE!

quite the snapshot you captured there. i think you missed my husband and daughter by a week. they were a week in the 9th ward before you got there, now they are east of the city.

Oh, yeah... I thought about your husband being down there while I was there, but I have no idea what he looks like, so I wouldn't have known it even if we were in the same place at the same time, lol.

Deep underneath, the decay does set in...

(Including teeth...butthenthatisanothermatter...)

"Old order changeth, giving way to New..."

'New' Orleans...So much irony in the name itself!

On a positive note...decay is necessary, proven so by none other than the famous Dr.Petroleum

Been busy as a bee...:D but managed a 55 in my rush!

Just the hearing (seeing?) words "New Orleans" makes me sad still. I will never get over that first week after the hurricane. All those people who were held hostage, without food or water or even basic hygiene. It's gross negligence on the part of our government. The very least they could have done was let the people walk out of there on their own.

Anyway... back to now. This is a fantastic 55... I knew exactly where you were from the word "jazz".

oh! was this about the hurricane?...

Natural calamity leaves so much death and decay behind. In India it is worse, with so many carcasses of humans and animals that are so difficult to remove.A pandemic breakout thereafter is inevitable...

Must feel like the end of the world to them, with entire families getting wiped out thus...so depressing...

I haven't been since Katrina but the few things still showing on TV about it, show a revival which I sincerely hope takes root.

The vibrancy of the city needs to come back. It was one of the jewels in the crown of the United States. Repair, renew, rebuild, but come back to us.
