Friday 55

Alright folks, the object of the game is to write a story using exactly 55 words. Susie is the one that started it all, but she has passed the monitoring duties into G-Man’s capable hands. So if you participate, be sure to leave a comment on his blog so others will know how to find your story.

The pink blanket slips from her fingers, floats to the floor. She stares at it, unbelieving. The painted faces of clowns on the wall smile at her, taunting her. Their faces swell and distort as the heat in the room rises. Flames lick at her skin. Her broken heart slows…stops. She doesn’t need it anymore.

James...
Being a mystery writer you always have these 20 little scenarios or so that could apply to your stories.
You always make me think.
You are so brilliantly descriptive..
And you add a wonderful touch of class to the 55 crew..
Thanks for playing this was Great....G

The clowns did it. They are EVIL and they started the fire. No, don't tell me they are two dimensional when we all know the truth. Clowns are baaaaaad.

lol, it could be the clowns. :D

It could be the mother so heart broke from losing her daughter, set fire to the room and killed herself, unable to live with the grief.

Or it could be the daughter was the victim of unspeakable abuses and set fire to the room to escape them the only way she knew how.

or it could be that the fire is metaphorical for her grief. The flames licking at her skin, the cleansing effect of coming to terms with it and the broken heart slows and stops, because she doesn't need the broken one anymore, she has a stronger one now.

Honestly, Every time I look at it, I see a different story. :D

giggling at kelly. i agree it was the clowns.

seriously though, i know the story i read but it's interesting to realize, as you say, how many different stories could possibly be contained in those 55 words. and each one grabs your heart. like a rohrshach test in story form rather than inkblots. that's masterful!

lol, Lime. The clowns get a bad wrap. :D Thank you for your kind words.

Sorry, Myrtle Beach. I should probably advise you to steer well clear of my current WIP when it is realeased as its plot revolves around a killer in a clown mask. :D

my goodness, all the 55's just get better and better. i'm still unsure if i'm going to join up yet. many people have encouraged me to give it a try, but i'm intimidated by 55's like yours! LOL

i really enjoyed this one.

That's how I read it James but as you say there are various scenarios possible. Fantastic writing as always James. :)
