Book News

Ok, boys and girls, guys and gals. I have some news that may disappoint some of you and may have others of you saying, “Thank God! I didn’t think the day would come soon enough.”

I won’t be posting any more chapters of Darkness on the Plains. Yes, I realize that for those of you who have been following along faithfully, I’m leaving you hanging. If you feel that way, drop me an email and I may be able work something out for you on an individual basis.

I have several reasons for the abrupt end to the posts, but first and foremost, I’ve completed, polished and said a few Hail Mary’s over the final MSS and have sent it off to a potential publisher.

I’m still working on another story that I have to complete soon as I have my first deadline. After I get it complete, I may work up something else to post on Fridays, but it will be awhile. Until then…

I've gotta say, I'm so glad.

Because it's actually in some publishing contracts that the ms can't have been posted on a blog or website or elsewhere, and every time I see people posting excerpts of their books I cringe and hope it won't be their deal-breaker.

But every person I've cautioned has bit my head off and handed it to me in a doggie bag...

I still firmly believe in the camp that it actually doesn't matter once the deal is on the table. I've seen too many instances where that's been the case. Actually, I've seen four instances (Yes, I realize statistically that's minute) where the book was actually discovered because it was posted on-line and it was posted as a first print not a reprint.

Having said that, in this wacky business it's so much better to be safe than sorry (as sung by AHA).

It was an absolute in my contract. Off the table if posted online anywhere, even a portion.

People will do whate'er they're going to do, and I hear all kinds of stories - the only thing that's an absolute in my life is my contract.

I was told, "Why am I going to pay to publish what everyone can go read for free?"

I think if you're serious about getting a deal, you're much better off playing it safe. One author with a big publisher even told me the agent was going after getting paid for an excerpt for the book to be printed in a magazine instead of putting it up on the author's website.

And then I noticed stuff about that in my contract too, and that had never even crossed my little mind...

And I'm not saying it to be mean. I'm saying it because it makes me cringe because I know I've seen writers miss a chance because of it, I'm glad I never did it, and I don't want to see others run into unexpected trouble at what should be a great point in your career.

But it would be interesting if someone asked Miss Snark. I'd be really curious to know what she would say about it.

well ,I am going to miss the story but I can understand why you stopped with it . You will have to make up silly short stories to feed my habit though... hehe just kidding ! Good luck !

Sandra, yes it would be interesting to hear her take on it.

Thanks, Breazy. I will see what I can come up with to keep you entertained. :D
